If you’re looking for the perfect holiday gift for your favorite breastfeeding mom, or you’re looking to craft your own Christmas list, this is the perfect list of unique items that you are sure to love. As a Lactation Consultant, I know what moms do and don’t need when they start breastfeeding. I also asked the opinions of experienced breastfeeding moms inside my free Facebook support group.
Before you buy anything, make sure you ask to make sure they don’t already have some of these items as sometimes these are purchased for new moms at baby showers or after their baby is born.
If you’re shopping for a pregnant mom that plans to breastfeed, make sure you check out my breastfeeding course- this makes a perfect gift!
1. Baby-Wearing Carrier
Baby carriers are a must-have for any newborn mom. My favorite is the Lille Baby carrier because that’s what I used with my son and it was breathable for those hot summer months. We used it from infancy through toddlerhood. I would get him to take naps in there so I could do things around the house with both my hands free. It can also come in handy if your partner wants to hold them while you go for a walk. It soothes your baby and helps them feel like they are back in the womb which is sure to calm down even the fussiest of babies.
2. Lactation Cookie Mix
Healthy lactation cookies do exist- and are much better than the ones you can buy at the regular grocery store. Try to look for maple syrup, honey, coconut sugar, or dates as the sweetener versus processed white sugar. You can even make your own mix and put it in a mason jar with a ribbon and present it like that! The less processed the ingredients the better for both the mom and baby. Some studies suggest that excess processed white sugar can cause fussiness in breastfed infants. You want to help the sweet mom to nourish her body, so the more wholesome ingredients the better. If you have to buy a pre-bought one, this is my favorite one by Ella Bella Homemade.
3. Breastmilk Jewelry
This is a thoughtful gift for the mom that wants to preserve her breastfeeding relationship with a special keepsake. There are many jewelry companies that will take the mom’s breast milk and create a magical piece of jewelry - rings, necklaces, earrings, and more. It typically takes 8-10 weeks to order, so make sure you get your order in early since these are handcrafted by artisans. You can also purchase a gift card like the one offered at Keepsake Mom.
4. Breastfeeding Photography Session
If you want your mom to cherish memories for years to come, a breastfeeding photography session is a way to go. She’ll be so grateful for those sweet memories. Moms also like putting babies in “milk baths” to take pictures with flowers or apples. Because the photographer will vary based on your location, I can’t recommend any, but, I do recommend you ask them if they have experience behind the camera shooting breastfeeding moms. Not all will be comfortable doing this, but likely if they have infant or maternity experience they will be willing.
5. Irene Organics Nipple Balm
Irene Organics Nipple Balm is my absolute favorite nipple balm for breastfeeding moms. With just a few simple, organic ingredients this soothing balm is simply the best. Even if you’re buying for a mom that has been breastfeeding awhile, she still may want some fresh nipple balm on hand for when baby starts teething because their saliva can irritate the nipple.
6. Nursing/Baby Schedule Whiteboard
This is a very useful gift idea for new mothers, and pregnant mothers that want to keep an eye on their baby’s nursing sessions, diaper output, and more. It’s important not to rely too much on a schedule the first several weeks of a baby’s life as that is when they should be nursing on demand and helping to regulate mom’s milk. This whiteboard can come in handy though, and it is reusable. You can find the Mewl Baby Daily Tracker on Amazon here.
7. Drinking Bottle for Water
Hydration is so important, even if you’re not breastfeeding! Since breast milk is made of over 75% water, it’s important that a mom is staying adequately hydrated for the best milk supply and to feel her best. Dehydration can cause tiredness and lethargy. A cute drinking bottle for water will make it that much more fun to make sure she’s getting all her water in! A quick Google or Amazon search will give you lots of ideas, but here’s my favorite.
8. Countertop Dishwasher
For the pumping mama in your life, this can really be a time saver. She may already have a dishwasher- but does she have a countertop dishwasher to use for all her pumping parts. You could even buy her a spare set of pumping parts- that’s always appreciated too! She can use this dishwasher to put all her parts in and wash them without having to run the main dishwasher. This also keeps food and other grime away from the bottles and pump parts which is important. This is a gift any pumping mom will appreciate.
Another idea is to get special baskets just for the dishwasher and drying racks.
9. Food Basket
A freshly prepared food basket always goes a long way with any mom who is busy and also breastfeeding. You can prepare your favorite healthy baked goods, put some granola bars in it, and add her favorite drink. You can also throw in a magazine or good book so she has entertainment while she’s nursing throughout the day and night. Here’s a gift basket with lots of healthy goodies you could buy and even ship to her house. This is a thoughtful gift that will be sure to please her.
10. Mini-Fridge for Pumping/Storing Milk
A compact refrigerator is such a great idea so mom doesn’t have to get up in the middle of the night to store milk. It can also come in handy if the mom is in the car a lot for work as some come with car chargers to keep it charged up. Here’s my favorite one on Amazon with a super fun and feminine design.
