What Are Keto Fat Bombs?
Keto fat bombs are bite size treats that are served cold. They are usually made with a nut butter of some sort and cocoa powder.
Keto fat bombs are used to add healthy fats to your diet. They ensure you are getting plenty of calories and healthy fats while on a keto diet. If you’re trying to lose weight, keto fat bombs are a great way to satisfy sweet cravings and meet your goals.
For a breastfeeding mom, these are a great source of calories if you struggle eating enough during the day. You can pop a few in a container from the fridge and eat them as you nurse.
My favorite ones are made with coconut oil, so they will melt if left out. Keep these in the fridge or freezer and they are ready to eat at any time.
I know these can taste yummy - just like your favorite dessert. But, you do want to be sure you eat them in moderation.
Too many calories can also cause weight gain, which is usually not the goal when doing keto and breastfeeding. When using the recipe below, try to eat only 3 per day.
How Do You Make Keto Fat Bombs Lactation Friendly?
Keto lactation fat bombs can help you lose weight as part of an overall approach to a modified keto diet while breastfeeding. Using milk-boosting ingredients like coconut oil, coconut cream, nut butters, black sesame seeds, brewer’s yeast, and flax seeds, can make keto fat bombs lactation-friendly.
These ingredients contain healthy fats (omega-3 and omega-6), which is important in order to support a good mix of fats in your breast milk. It’s also important for supporting your mental wellbeing and your baby’s brain development.
The below recipe can also be made dairy-free by using coconut cream instead of heavy cream. This means moms opting for no dairy while breastfeeding can enjoy it too.
Keto Lactation Fat Bomb Ingredients
- 1/2 cup of unsweetened nut butter (unsweetened peanut butter is my favorite)
- 1/4 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder
- 3 tablespoons of flax seeds
- 1/2 cup unrefined coconut oil at room temperature
- 2 tablespoons of heavy cream (or coconut cream)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons Stevia in the raw
- 2 tablespoons of unsweetened shredded coconut for rolling
- 1 teaspoon black sesame seeds (optional as a milk-booster)
How To Make Keto Lactation Fat Bombs
- In a large bowl, mix nut butter, cocoa powder, and flax seeds, Add in brewer’s yeast and sesame seeds (if using).
- Add room-temperature coconut oil until it forms a paste.
- Add vanilla, cream, and Stevia until it becomes a paste again.
- Use a cookie scooper to scoop into individual balls. Alternatively, you can use your hands to roll into balls. It should make about 8-12 balls total depending on how large you make them.
- Coat the balls with shredded coconut.
- Place balls on parchment paper on a baking tray.
- Freeze for 10 minutes or put in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving.
If the dough is too thin to shape into balls, place it in the refrigerator for 30 minutes before rolling. I like using a cookie scooper to make the balls more uniform and keep the paste/dough off my hands as much as possible.
I think they taste good without rolling in coconut, so if you want to skip that part they will still taste yummy! If you don’t like the texture of flax seeds, substitute with hemp seeds.
Storage
Store keto lactation fat bombs in the refrigerator in an airtight container. They will last for a few days there, or up to a few weeks in the freezer.
Variations
- You can use almond butter or cashew butter in place of peanut butter
- Use coconut sugar or monk fruit in place of Stevia
- Replace coconut cream for regular cream
- Instead of rolling balls in coconut, you could roll in chopped peanuts or cocoa powder.
- Add a dash of cinnamon to the paste or outside of balls before rolling in coconut for a metabolism boost.
- Other milk boosters that can be added are hemp seeds in place of flax seeds and brewer’s yeast.
