What Qualities Make a Great Gift To a Breastfeeding Mom?
Gifts that can be utilized by a breastfeeding mom make the best gifts. While knick-knacks look pretty, they often collect dust and aren’t utilitarian.
You want to find a gift that promotes self-care, makes life easier for the mom or provides her with an easy resource.
The Best Gifts for Breastfeeding & Pumping Moms
These are gift ideas from real moms that I’ve had the pleasure of helping and from my own experience as a new mom and a breastfeeding mom. Practical gifts for breastfeeding moms make the best gifts, in my opinion, because they can be utilized.
When a mom is exhausted and running around like crazy these types are gifts are perfect because they solve a problem or make life easier. You’ll find the most practical gifts for nursing moms in this list to help nurture that new mom in your life.
Personalized Mama Bear Water Tumbler
Since breast milk is comprised of mostly water, it is important that a breastfeeding mom is drinking plenty of water in a day. At least half her body weight in ounces is the recommendation.
So, keeping a water tumbler nearby is a great idea for easy tracking and filling. A cute water bottle makes it even more fun to drink from and refill throughout the day. You can even take it a step further and get her electrolyte packets to use a couple of times a day, which can help give a new mom energy and minerals.
Amazon Prime Membership
Everyone loves Amazon and the convenience of getting quick packages delivered to your door without having to leave. This is even more true in the early days with a newborn baby. When you need things for you or your baby, free shipping and discounted prices are handy.
That’s where an Amazon Prime Membership can be a great idea for that new mom that hasn’t gotten one yet. From baby diapers to clothes and even a new postpartum wardrobe for you- Amazon has it all!
Plus, moms can even do late-night shopping on Amazon while nursing their baby.
Hands-Free Pumping Bra
Every working mom or mom that needs her hands to do other things while pumping, like eat, needs a hands-free pumping bra. These are so handy so that you can multitask in your breastfeeding chair while you’re pumping.
To use it just slip the flanges through the bra and leave the double pump in place while you do other things. This works best with a double stimulating electric pump to ensure you’re not having to manually express.
Organic Nipple Butter
Breastfeeding takes practice and most babies and moms are learning together. Sometimes that can lead to sore nipples.
Gift the breastfeeding mom in your life organic nipple butter to help soothe and heal her nipples. It can really make a difference in the healing time. Opt for organic nipple butter since she’s putting it directly on her skin, which is easily absorbed by the body.
Sitz Bath Salts
This is a great small gift that will go a long way to helping breastfeeding moms relax and heal after giving birth. Sitz bath salts can be used for sitz baths or a regular bath.
They contain Epsom salts to relieve aches and pains, dead sea salt, aloe vera, yarrow, nettle leaf, and other minerals. The nettle leaf is especially good for new moms to help promote healthy breast milk production.
Cool Mist Diffuser
If the breastfeeding mom in your life doesn’t have a diffuser yet, or even if she does, this is a great gift. You can put diffusers in every room of your house if you want.
Diffusing quality essential oils can help heal a mom and keep her calm and relaxed during the postpartum period. A diffuser is a great accent piece when you purchase a nice one, and you can buy Plant Therapy essential oils that are kid-safe to go with it.
Nursing Wear
Every breastfeeding mom deserves a few shirts, a nightgown, and nursing camis to get through the first few months and longer of nursing. It just makes life so much easier. I also like v-neck shirts, or tank tops that are stretchy that can pull down easily.
When babies are hungry, they are hungry, and easy and quick access just makes nursing easier.
Silk Eye Mask
New moms typically sleep all times of the day to catch up from the many late-night feedings. Treat her to a silk eye mask to help her get quality sleep even during the day.
It is silky smooth and comfortable. If she doesn’t have black-out curtains, an eye mask is a great alternative because it doesn’t let much light seep through.
Temperature Controlled Smart MuG
Most moms start drinking coffee and tea again after their baby is born. Treat her to a mug that will keep her drink nice and toasty. A temperature-controlled smart mug is great to have during the winter.
Be careful to keep it away from the baby of course, but this is a unique gift that will be well appreciated for keeping coffee or tea warm. You can even buy herbal tea to go with it, like organic lavender with chamomile, for an extra relaxing experience.
Newborn Essentials Skincare Set
The breastfeeding mom in your life may have planned dinners all week, nursed the baby around the clock, but save her a trip to the store and get her this lovely newborn essential set that includes baby shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and oil. The Gryph and Ivy Rose gift set is toxin-free and vegan making it a great option for even the most sensitive moms and babies. The packaging is adorable making it ready to gift and the reviews are great too.
Mama Necklace
A trendy way to remember she’s loved is by getting her a “mama” necklace to wear. I remember wearing one with my son’s “G” initial on it when he was first born and I loved it. If your breastfeeding mom loves jewelry, a mama necklace is a great option.
Amazon’s Echo Dot
This is a very handy device to have if you can’t be there to lend her a helping hand. From turning on and off the TV to singing the baby a lullaby, it can be helpful when she is nursing (or just too tired) and can’t move.
Baby Carrier
Carrying your baby around may be the only way you get anything done as a breastfeeding mom. Some moms can even nurse with their baby in there. Babies really enjoy being close to their new mom, even if they aren’t actively nursing, so this is a great way to keep the baby close and still be able to move about the house to do other things.
I used a ring sling baby carrier and my Lille Baby carrier when my son was little and I plan to do the same with my daughter.
Breastfeeding Gift Basket
If you’re short on time or want to bring it to a baby shower, a gift basket for the breastfeeding mom is a great idea. A gift basket can have a little bit of everything in it. You can make your own basket using items like:
- Nipple butter/ointment
- Breast cooling pads
- Magnesium bath salts
- Lotion
- An eye mask
- Nursing pads
- Perineal spray
- Personalized water bottle
- Pre-made snacks - here are some breastfeeding snack ideas
Massage Gift Card
Sometimes a breastfeeding mom just needs to get away for an hour to restore her body and mind. A massage gift card is a great way to show her you care while giving her the self-care that she deserves.
You’ll want to arrange for a babysitter too, but any mom would be appreciative of a massage after having a baby.
Meal Delivery Gift Card
When a family has a new baby, everyone in the home is sleep-deprived, but especially a breastfeeding mom. If she’s used to cooking and taking care of the house, then a new baby can definitely put a temporary stop to that in the early days.
A meal delivery service is a great way to offer cooked hot food without having to cook it yourself.
Free Gifts For Nursing Moms
There are lots of free gifts available for breastfeeding moms. You can check with your insurance to see if they provide a breast pump voucher for you. Oftentimes they will, at no additional cost to you.
Many baby department stores also offer free bags of baby and breastfeeding items when you sign up for a registry. Amazon offers a great registry with an extensive welcome gift for moms. The registry is accessible to anyone and items can be shipped directly to you.
The Top Gifts for Moms Who Are Finishing Breastfeeding
Ending your breastfeeding journey is very bittersweet. While you’re happy that your baby is becoming more independent without relying on you for sustenance, you will miss that bonding time and experience. These are a few ways to help remember that journey and cheer up a mom that may be experiencing sadness from finishing breastfeeding.
New Bra
Getting her a new bra is a great way to make her feel special. Take her to her favorite lingerie store and let her pick out a few of her favorites. She won’t be requiring those clip-down nursing bras anymore, so it’ll be a fun experience.
Pampering Gift Card
Treat her to a day of pampering as a way to say “thank you” and support her in nourishing her body. A facial, manicure, pedicure, hair cut, massage…any of these are good for new moms and experienced moms alike.
Breast Milk Jewelry
There is no better way to commemorate your breastfeeding experience than to order a piece of jewelry with your breast milk. Many moms find this to be a wonderful and thoughtful gift as they conclude their nursing journey. There are many companies that will help you through the jewelry-making process. Here are a few of my favorites:
- Keepsake Mom Breastmilk Jewelry
- Mamma’s Liquid Love Breastmilk Jewelry
- Milk & Honey
- Etsy vendors
Or, you can even get DIY breast milk preservation jewelry kit and make it at home.
Nursing moms put in a lot of hard work to feed their babies. Buying gifts for breastfeeding moms from the list above will really show your appreciation!
Use these ideas or think about her favorite thing to do or buy and treat her to something special. All moms deserve to be appreciated, but especially when breastfeeding.
It takes extra energy to be able to nourish another human while also nourishing yourself. Any support — a gift, sleeping, meals — that can be offered is a blessing.
